French Sky Charts Coptic Stitch Photo Album
“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
- Carl Sagan, Cosmos
Even here in oh-so-brightly lit Brooklyn, I find myself looking up and out at the stars above as often as I can. I found this beautiful decorative paper, a silkscreened French sky chart pattern from 1828, in grays and black on a weathered cream background. The calm of the colors and the density of the stars drew me in and it remains one of my very favorite patterns.
The albums I have made from these star chart sheets are bound entirely by hand, by me, with hand torn, heavyweight blank pages with a feathery deckled edge. They are sewn in a Coptic stitch binding with waxed gray Irish linen thread. The binding is self-reinforcing with a knotted spine and the structure allows the album to lie flat when open.
Our albums are constructed to be used and enjoyed, and to last for generations. We hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoy making them.
